The Growth of London visualisation aims to highlight the growth and patterns of London’s evolution through the last few hundred years. Historical data is always hard to find as most historical maps are not in the current spatial formats of shp files or raster format files that are commonly used is GIS or programming.  In order to capture the boundaries of the definition of London through the years, geo-referencing of the historic maps was required. This was completed by geo-referencing using the ESRI toolkit.

This animation was completed in Processing using the MapThing library by Jon Reades. This animation steps through each year and shows the growth of both London’s boundary and the roads as they were created through history.
